Robert Fludd's Depiction of Consciousness
Consciousness is one of the most controversial topics in all of neuroscience. At its essence, it refers to the state of individuals being aware of themselves and their surroundings. However, there is still mystery over the underpinnings of this fascinating phenomenon. Many have debated over what can be considered to be consciousness. So, how can we understand the mechanisms of consciousness?
An answer may lie in the study of philosophy. There are two main philosophical theories that attempt to explain consciousness: dualism and materialism (also known as physicalism). Dualism holds that consciousness is not physical and is distinct from the body. In other words, there is a duality between the mind and body, which is why this theory is called dualism. Meanwhile, materialism holds that consciousness is not distinct from the body. That is, it is physical, or materialistic, in nature, which is why this theory is called materialism (or physicalism).
These philosophical theories of consciousness may help give insights into how consciousness works at a basic level. However, these are only some of the many theories that philosophers have about consciousness. Ultimately, looking at consciousness from a philosophical lens can help us understand this unique natural phenomenon at a deeper level than ever before.
